Job Title: Library Manager - Welwyn Garden City
Starting Salary: £38,220 opportunity to progress to £41,771 per annum (pro rata for part time) 
Hours: 37 hours (18.5 hours job share can be considered) 
Location: Welwyn Garden City, some occasional travel to Community Libraries 
Contract Type: Permanent

About the team 

  • This is one of the larger team in Hertfordshire Libraries- with 24 frontline staff and 6 supervisors. As well as the 6 supervisor roles- the Library manager (LM) also is the line manager for the 4 Enquiry Team Librarians who provide the County wide Information service. The library is currently open 7 days a week.
  • The library serves the whole community- providing services to young people as well as having several groups aimed at older people. It is well used by local students for study purposes. 
  • The Library Manager is a key role for providing leadership, guidance and support to the team, following service wide standards and policies
  • There is a Customer Service role who line managers the frontline staff . The Assistant Customer Service Supervisors are managed by the Library Manager and carry out admin and H&S duties- including at the 4 satellite libraries. 
  • The LM works with various stakeholders and partners- including the Volunteer Committees for the 3 community libraries. Outreach partners include Welwyn Hatfield Borough Council, the local BID and groups such as Dementia Support
  • The LM interacts with other Library Managers, Senior Librarians with a service area responsibility e.g. Information and with managers at the Hertfordshire County Council Customer Service Centre. 
  • The new postholder would be joining an established team at a time of several changes for local government. There would be opportunities to input to service delivery and to support other staff dealing with changes to their working environment

About the role 

Hertfordshire Libraries exists to help people to live better lives for longer acting as hubs for community activities, places to access digital technology, creative spaces and gateways to reading, information and wellbeing. We are looking for someone who has the drive to develop Hertfordshire Libraries vision to deliver a high quality, sustainable service, working closely in partnership with local communities to remain relevant to diverse and changing needs of Hertfordshire residents.

 The main duties and responsibilities:

  • To promote the library service to the wider community, and to actively engage with local partnerships and organisations
  • To act as the face of the library service in the community and lead and motivate the library team to deliver and achieve service objectives
  • To undertake the role of site manager at the library with responsibility for providing a library service to the community and for the day-to-day management and supervision of its operation
  • To be responsible for the countywide Libraries Information Service and liase with the County Council Customer Service Centre. 
  • As a member of the East Area Management team, take responsibility for the development and delivery of service provision within the area.
  • To contribute to the ambition of attracting more visitors through participation in outreach and promotional activities in the community, and via partnership working with relevant organisations and community groups
