Starting Salary: £25,185 with the opportunity to progress to £26,403 per annum (pro rata for part-time)
Hours: up to 37 hours per week

Hertfordshire’s libraries are more than collections of books. They are hubs for community activities, places to access digital technology, and gateways to reading, information and wellbeing. Our service points include small village libraries, town and city libraries, and performing arts libraries. Hertfordshire Libraries exists to help people to live better lives for longer. All of which means today’s Library Assistants need to be passionate about proactively helping people of all ages and from all backgrounds.

About the role 

Library Assistant roles offer successful applicants the opportunity to get involved in a hugely varied range of activities.

  • You will be actively promoting and supporting the use of all of our library resources and helping customers to find the information that they need.
  • You will help to deliver a programme of library activities and events, as well as supporting the Library Manager in all aspects of the day to day running of the library.
  • In some libraries you will be involved in helping us to deliver services that are unique to that service point. This may include, for example, assisting people to use our CreatorSpace resources, including 3D printers and virtual reality devices.
  • All of our Library Assistant roles help to make a positive difference to people’s lives.

About you

Essential:

  • Experience in delivering a high standard of Customer Service to members of the public.
  • Strong communication skills
  • Demonstrable time management skills in organising and prioritising.
  • Competent ICT skills, including Microsoft Office, Internet and other computer-based resources.
  • Evidence of working collaboratively with a team to achieve aims and objectives

Desirable:

  • Experience of meeting KPIs and other targets set by Team Leads
  • Skill or experience in promoting events and services.
  • Evidence of, or experience in, problem solving
  • Ability to support members of the public with queries and use of IcT.
  • Knowledge of Library Services.

 We have vacancies in the following Libraries:

Berkhamsted Library HP4 - 23 hours - Permanent

The successful candidate will be a friendly and confident person who is happy to work in a customer facing role. You will be competent using computer packages for searching for information and posting on social media such as Facebook. You will be organised and confident in assisting customers to make the most of the services that libraries offer. You will be flexible to assist and deliver library activities such as Baby Rhyme Times, Toddler Tales, Lego club, IT Taster Sessions, author events and class visits.  This includes singing rhymes and reading stories to young children and their carers on your own as well as supporting libraries in the local area. This post has a level of responsibility in opening/ closing the library and in training other staff.

Cheshunt Library - 23.5 hours - Permanent

Cheshunt library is a busy family-based library, hosting popular and well attended children’s events as well as specialist adult events. It is a medium-sized library with an emphasis on the local community, and a strong regular customer base. This role requires the literacy skills and confidence to plan and deliver: class visits, story time sessions, and a range of events and activities for both adults and children in a diverse working environment.

Oxhey Library WD19 7AG - 20.5 hours - Permanent

Oxhey is a suburb of Watford easily accessed by road and public transport.This role will include leading children's events including Baby Rhyme Time and Story Time as well as stock work and supporting library users with enquiries. The timetable includes a mix of full days and half days as well as every Saturday till 13:15.

Oakmere Library   EN6 5BZ - 19.75 hours - Permanent 

Oakmere Library in Potters Bar is a welcoming community library open to the public five days a week. We are looking for an enthusiastic team player to support a range of adult and children’s activities, including our popular weekly rhyme time sessions and story readings for young children.We would also value someone confident in helping maintain our Facebook page and happy to support customers with basic IT skills.As part of our small, dedicated team, you will have the opportunity to make a real difference in the community and contribute to Hertfordshire Libraries’ Inspiring Libraries strategy.
